The Kuki-Zo tribal council has clarified that National Highway 2, which connects Imphal to Dimapur, was never blocked despite claims suggesting otherwise. Their statement comes at a sensitive time when the government and tribal groups are working towards peace after months of unrest in Manipur. For residents and traders, the highway is a crucial lifeline, carrying essential goods and supplies across the region.
The Ministry of Home Affairs recently stated that NH-2 had been reopened ahead of the Prime Minister’s visit, hinting that the route was obstructed earlier. This was quickly countered by the Kuki-Zo leadership, who maintained that movement along the highway had not been restricted. They explained that what existed were security concerns and buffer zones between Meitei and Kuki-dominated areas, not a blockade by their community.
Local leaders stressed that their appeal was mainly for peace in sensitive regions like Kangpokpi, where tensions often flare. They also noted that ensuring safe passage for commuters and transporters remains the responsibility of security forces, not community groups. The tribal council urged all sides to avoid framing the situation in a way that could spark fresh misunderstandings.
Meanwhile, a fresh peace agreement between the Centre, the Manipur government and tribal representatives has renewed hopes of easing tensions. The pact involves commitments to relocate armed camps away from civilian areas, strengthen cooperation between communities and improve safe movement of goods through highways. For people in Tier 2 cities and smaller towns dependent on this route, the smoother flow of essentials could bring much-needed relief.
The larger issue highlights how communication gaps can deepen mistrust in conflict zones. By clarifying their position and entering structured talks, tribal groups have signaled a willingness to move towards reconciliation. For Manipur, ensuring that critical roads like NH-2 remain open and safe is not just about transport but about restoring confidence and stability in everyday life.
