An Indian tourist, Upasana Gill, has made a desperate appeal for assistance after being caught in the escalating “Gen Z” protests in Nepal. In a video message, she recounted how her hotel in Pokhara was set on fire by protesters, forcing her to flee for safety. Gill, who had traveled to Nepal to host a volleyball league, described the harrowing experience of being chased by a mob armed with sticks while she was at a spa. She urgently called upon the Indian embassy for help, stating, “I am stranded here in Pokhara, Nepal… Please help us.”
The “Gen Z” protests in Nepal began as a response to a government ban on social media platforms and have since evolved into a broader movement against corruption and the political elite. The demonstrations have turned violent, with protesters targeting government buildings, political leaders’ residences, and public infrastructure. Notably, the wife of former Prime Minister Jhala Nath Khanal was tragically killed when a mob set her house on fire.
Tourists, including Indians, have found themselves caught in the turmoil. Reports indicate that several hotels have been destroyed, and travelers are facing difficulties in accessing transportation and essential services. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs has issued advisories urging Indian citizens to defer non-essential travel to Nepal and to exercise caution if already in the country.
Many Indian nationals, particularly from states like Kerala and Maharashtra, are stranded in Nepal due to the ongoing unrest. For instance, a group of 40 tourists from Kozhikode and Malappuram districts were stuck in Goshala, near Kathmandu, as protesters blocked roads and set tyres ablaze. They sought refuge at a police station, which was also under attack, before managing to reach their hotel and confirm their safety.
Similarly, Ajay Gaur from Amravati, who has been working in Nepal for seven years, described his escape from the violence and subsequent refuge in a hotel. He expressed concern for his friends still in the country, highlighting the widespread fear among expatriates and travelers.
The ongoing protests in Nepal have created a volatile environment, endangering both locals and foreign nationals. The situation remains fluid, with the potential for further escalation. Indian citizens in Nepal are advised to stay indoors, avoid public gatherings, and follow the guidance of local authorities. The Indian embassy is actively working to assist stranded nationals and is in constant communication with Nepali officials to ensure the safety and well-being of its citizens.
