Violence Erupts in Cuttack Following Durga Idol Immersion; Curfew Imposed to Restore Order

Cuttack, a city known for its rich cultural heritage, witnessed unprecedented violence following the Durga idol immersion procession on Friday night. The Trigger: Loud Music Sparks Tensions

The unrest began around 1:30 AM on Saturday near Haathi Pokhari in Dargah Bazar, where a procession organized by the Jhanjirimangala Bhagabat Puja Committee was making its way to Debigada for the immersion. Local residents reportedly objected to the high-decibel music accompanying the procession, leading to a heated argument between the two groups. The situation quickly escalated when a mob began pelting stones and glass bottles from rooftops, injuring several revellers, including the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Khilari Rishikesh Dnyandeo.

Escalation and Police Response

In response to the violence, police intensified security measures across the city. However, tensions flared again on Sunday when a group attempted to hold a motorcycle rally without prior permission. The rally led to stone-pelting and arson, resulting in injuries to at least 25 individuals, including eight police personnel. Authorities imposed a 36-hour curfew and suspended internet services to prevent the spread of misinformation.

The curfew has brought daily life in Cuttack to a standstill. Essential services such as hospitals, pharmacies, and grocery stores remain operational, but residents are urged to avoid unnecessary movement. Heavy police deployment continues, with 60 police platoons and eight paramilitary companies stationed across sensitive zones.
