Mumbai’s First Fully Underground Metro Line Now Operational: A New Era in Urban Mobility

Mumbai’s urban landscape has taken a significant leap forward with the inauguration of the city’s first fully underground metro corridor, Metro Line 3, also known as the Aqua Line. Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially launched the final phase of this ambitious project on October 8, 2025, marking a milestone in Mumbai’s public transportation history.

Project Overview

The Aqua Line spans a total length of 33.5 kilometers, connecting Cuffe Parade in the south to Aarey JVLR in the north. Out of the 27 stations along the route, 26 are underground, with the sole at-grade station located at Aarey JVLR. This fully underground design is a first for Mumbai, aiming to minimize surface-level disruptions in the densely populated city.

Key Features and Benefits

  • Enhanced Connectivity: The Aqua Line integrates seamlessly with existing metro lines, suburban rail services, monorail, and bus networks, facilitating smooth intermodal transfers.
  • Reduced Travel Time: Commuters can travel from Cuffe Parade to Aarey in approximately 54 minutes, a significant reduction compared to road travel times.
  • Environmental Impact: By providing an efficient alternative to road transport, the metro line is expected to alleviate traffic congestion and reduce vehicular emissions, contributing to a cleaner environment.

Ticketing and Fare Structure

The fare system is designed to be commuter-friendly, with charges based on the distance traveled:

  • Up to 3 km: ₹10
  • 3–12 km: ₹20
  • 12–18 km: ₹30
  • 18–24 km: ₹40
  • 24–30 km: ₹50
  • 30–36 km: ₹60

A unified mobility platform, the ‘Mumbai One’ app, has been introduced, allowing passengers to plan journeys, check schedules, and make payments across various modes of public transport, including metro, buses, and taxis.

Conclusion

The operationalization of Metro Line 3 marks a significant advancement in Mumbai’s public transportation infrastructure. With its modern amenities, efficient connectivity, and commitment to environmental sustainability, the Aqua Line is poised to transform urban commuting in Mumbai, offering residents a reliable and eco-friendly alternative to traditional road transport.
