IMD Issues Red Alert in Himachal and Punjab as Heavy Rains Lash North India

Sakshi LadeWeather2 months ago

The Indian Meteorological Department has issued red alerts for Himachal Pradesh and Punjab, warning of intense rainfall over the next few days. Delhi, Mumbai, and parts of Rajasthan are also expected to witness moderate to heavy showers. The alerts have prompted state administrations to prepare for possible disruptions, including traffic snarls, waterlogging, and landslides in hilly regions.
In Himachal Pradesh, districts such as Kullu, Shimla, and Mandi remain at high risk of landslides and flash floods due to the continuous downpour. Authorities have advised residents and tourists to avoid unnecessary travel, especially on mountain roads that are prone to blockages. Punjab has also been put on alert, with officials monitoring rivers and canals for possible overflow.
Meanwhile, Delhi and Mumbai are bracing for heavy spells that may bring relief from heat but could also disrupt daily life. Waterlogging in low-lying areas of Mumbai and traffic congestion in Delhi are expected, with civic bodies already issuing advisories. Rajasthan too is forecast to receive strong showers, particularly in northern districts.
The monsoon’s shifting intensity highlights the growing unpredictability of weather patterns. For tier 2 cities across these states, the rainfall could bring both opportunities and challenges. While it may help replenish groundwater and support agriculture, the possibility of damage to roads, homes, and crops cannot be ignored.
The IMD has urged people to remain cautious and keep track of local advisories. With the festive season approaching and travel picking up, the focus remains on balancing normal life with safety. The coming days will test the preparedness of states to manage the twin effects of relief and risk that heavy rains often bring.
