Assam CM Assures Chargesheet in Zubeen Garg Death Case Within Three Months

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has assured the public that a chargesheet in the death of renowned singer Zubeen Garg will be filed within the legally mandated three-month period. Speaking at a government event in Dibrugarh, Sarma stated that the investigation, led by the Special Investigation Team (SIT), is progressing as expected and that the government is committed to ensuring justice for the late artist.

Investigation Progress and Arrests

The SIT has made significant strides in the case, leading to multiple arrests. Notably, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Sandipan Garg, who is also the late singer’s cousin, was arrested and placed under seven-day police custody by the Kamrup District High Court. Additionally, two of Zubeen Garg’s personal security officers (PSOs) were suspended following the discovery of approximately ₹1 crore in their bank accounts, raising suspicions of financial misconduct. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has also questioned Shyamkanu Mahanta, the festival organizer, in connection with the investigation.

Judicial Inquiry and International Cooperation

In response to public demand, the Assam government has ordered a judicial inquiry into the circumstances surrounding Zubeen Garg’s death. The inquiry will be led by Justice Soumitra Saikia of the Gauhati High Court. Furthermore, Chief Minister Sarma has appealed to the Assamese community in Singapore to assist local authorities, acknowledging the challenges faced by Assam Police in conducting investigations abroad.
