A 19-year-old B.Ed student in Odisha’s Balasore district died by suicide last week, triggering public outrage over alleged sexual harassment by her college principal. As the student’s final rites are set to take place today, the case has led to widespread protests, police action, and renewed questions about safety in educational institutions.

What Happened
The student, enrolled at the Talanagar-based Bahanaga B.Ed College, reportedly died by suicide on campus on July 2. Her family claims she was being harassed by the college principal, leading her to take the extreme step. A suicide note was found, in which the student mentioned persistent harassment by the accused.

Principal Arrested
Following public pressure and growing protests by student groups and local residents, police arrested the college principal, Brajakishore Behera, on charges of sexual harassment and abetment of suicide. He was produced in court and has been sent to judicial custody. The college management is also being questioned for negligence.

Family Demands Justice
The student’s family, supported by local organisations, refused to accept her body until a proper investigation was launched. They demanded strict punishment for those responsible. After assurances from the police, they have now agreed to perform the last rites today.

Student Protests and Public Response
The incident has sparked protests in Balasore and surrounding areas, especially among students and youth groups. Many are demanding tighter oversight of private educational institutions and better mechanisms to report and act on harassment complaints. The case has particularly struck a chord in Tier 2 cities, where such incidents often go unreported or are silenced.

Government Reaction
The Odisha government has directed the local administration to ensure a fair investigation. Women’s rights activists are calling for independent inquiries and improved support systems for students facing harassment.

Conclusion
This case has once again exposed the deep-rooted issues around student safety and institutional accountability. As the family prepares to bid farewell to their daughter, the focus must now shift to ensuring justice is delivered and similar tragedies are prevented in the future.
