Delhi Godman Arrested After Two-Month Manhunt

Chaitanyananda Saraswati, a 62-year-old self-styled godman and former director of the Sri Sharada Institute of Indian Management-Research in Delhi, was arrested early on Sunday from a hotel in Agra after evading authorities for nearly two months. He faces serious allegations of sexually harassing 17 female students and embezzling funds from the institution.

Evading Authorities

Following the filing of a First Information Report (FIR) on August 4, Saraswati went into hiding, reportedly staying in 13 different hotels across Mathura, Vrindavan, and Agra. Authorities had issued a lookout notice and formed multiple teams to track him down. Despite his efforts to remain undetected, he was apprehended at a hotel in Agra’s Taj Ganj area around 3:30 AM on Sunday.

Allegations and Evidence

The allegations against Saraswati include sending obscene messages, making unwelcome physical contact, and using CCTV cameras to monitor students’ movements, some of which were reportedly installed in bathrooms. Investigations revealed that many of the victims were students from the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) scholarship program. In addition to the harassment claims, Saraswati is accused of financial misconduct, including misappropriation of funds amounting to approximately ₹20 crore.

Recovery of Fake Credentials

During his arrest, police recovered fake visiting cards from Saraswati, one claiming he was a Permanent Ambassador to the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and another listing him as a member of the BRICS Joint Commission and an Indian Special Envoy. Authorities also seized multiple mobile phones and an iPad, which are being examined for further evidence.
