Heavy Rains Alert in Odisha and West Bengal as Bay of Bengal Depression Approaches

A deep depression over the Bay of Bengal is set to bring heavy rainfall to Odisha and West Bengal, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue alerts for multiple districts. The system is moving at a speed of 18 kmph and is expected to cross the Odisha coast near Gopalpur in Ganjam district, with extremely heavy rain likely in several coastal areas.

In Odisha, seven districts have been placed on red alert, 16 on orange, and the remaining seven on yellow. Coastal and southern regions have already received significant rainfall since Wednesday, and the state government has deployed resources to manage potential flooding and waterlogging. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea until further notice.

West Bengal is also likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall over districts including South 24 Parganas, Purba and Paschim Medinipur, and Jhargram. Kolkata and Howrah may witness heavy downpours, raising concerns about traffic and drainage issues in urban areas.

For Tier-2 cities and towns, residents are advised to remain cautious, avoid low-lying areas, and stay updated on weather advisories. Authorities have urged communities to prepare for possible disruptions in transport and utilities due to persistent rains.

The IMD will continue monitoring the depression, and residents are encouraged to follow official warnings to minimize risks. While heavy rain is vital for replenishing water sources, preparedness and caution remain key as the system moves closer to the coast.
