Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has launched a sharp attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the issue of US tariffs on Indian goods. Speaking on the matter, Kejriwal said that India should respond firmly by imposing 100 percent tariffs on American products. He also targeted former US President Donald Trump, calling him a coward for adopting policies that hurt India’s trade interests.
The debate comes at a time when India’s exporters, especially from Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, are feeling the pinch of higher duties. Products like textiles, engineering goods, and agricultural items from states such as Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and Tamil Nadu have been among the worst affected. Many small and medium businesses fear that prolonged restrictions could damage their ability to compete in the global market.
Kejriwal argued that the Indian government should take a bold stand instead of relying on negotiations that may not yield results. According to him, a reciprocal move would show that India will not allow its economy to be undermined. He further stated that protecting local industries must be the priority, as millions of livelihoods depend on exports.
While his remarks sparked strong political reactions, trade experts suggest that imposing equally harsh tariffs could escalate tensions further. They point out that both countries rely on each other in several key sectors, including technology, pharmaceuticals, and services. A balanced approach, according to them, would be to continue talks while also creating support systems for Indian exporters to withstand the impact.
For now, the issue has added a new dimension to the political and economic debate. As global trade rules shift, how India chooses to respond will play a crucial role in safeguarding both its businesses and its international standing.
