Onam 2025: A Festival of Unity, Culture and Joy

Onam, the harvest festival of Kerala, is being celebrated with grandeur and devotion in 2025. The ten-day festival, which marks the homecoming of the legendary King Mahabali, is not only about rituals but also about unity, prosperity and cultural pride. From traditional feasts to boat races and floral decorations, Onam continues to bind Malayalis across the world, including those in Tier 2 cities where community gatherings bring people closer.

The highlight of Onam is the Onasadya, a grand vegetarian feast served on banana leaves with over two dozen dishes. Families and neighbours gather to share the meal, symbolising togetherness and equality. Pookalam, the floral carpet, adorns homes and public spaces, showcasing creativity and a sense of competition among youngsters.

Cultural performances such as Kathakali, Pulikali and Thiruvathira add to the festive spirit. In rural towns and small cities, schools and community centres host programmes to ensure that traditional art forms reach the younger generation. The famous Vallamkali, or snake boat race, draws crowds from far and wide, turning riverbanks into lively arenas of cheer and excitement.

For Malayali families living outside Kerala, including in cities like Nagpur, Pune and Hyderabad, Onam celebrations are recreated through local cultural associations. These gatherings feature group meals, dances and festive games, ensuring that the younger generation stays connected to its roots. Social media too plays a large role, with greetings, images and messages keeping the spirit alive among those who cannot celebrate in person.

In today’s context, Onam is more than a harvest festival. It is a reminder of cultural heritage, social harmony and the value of shared joy. The traditions of Onam continue to inspire people to look beyond divisions and celebrate unity. As families exchange greetings this year, the festival once again reinforces its timeless message—prosperity, happiness and togetherness for all.
