Sikhs for Justice Threatens Protest at Indian Consulate in Vancouver

Tensions have risen once again between India and Khalistani groups abroad after Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), a banned separatist outfit, issued a call to “siege” the Indian Consulate in Vancouver. The move comes following the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada last year, an incident that strained New Delhi–Ottawa ties and continues to stir political and diplomatic debates.

The group has circulated posters targeting India’s new envoy in Vancouver, intensifying concerns about the safety of Indian diplomatic staff. Indian officials have frequently raised alarms about threats to missions and personnel in countries with significant diaspora populations, particularly where Khalistani elements remain active.

While SFJ has been declared unlawful in India, its overseas presence has made it harder to contain. For Indian citizens living in Canada, especially in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities with growing diaspora communities, the issue is not only political but also about personal safety and social harmony.

Diplomatic tensions between India and Canada have already impacted trade talks, student exchanges, and people-to-people ties. The latest threats risk further complicating the fragile relationship, even as both governments attempt to maintain dialogue.

What this really means for ordinary Indians is a reminder of how international politics can directly affect diaspora communities. Security concerns, strained ties, and repeated protests underline the importance of stronger cooperation between India and Canada in addressing such challenges. The coming weeks will show whether the threat remains symbolic or escalates into a larger diplomatic standoff.
