Gitanjali Angmo, wife of climate activist and education reformer Sonam Wangchuk, has firmly stated that she does not wish to politicize her husband’s arrest but will pursue justice through legal means. In a recent statement, she emphasized that politicizing the matter does not align with their values and that she intends to challenge the detention on its merits in court .
Sonam Wangchuk was arrested on September 26 under the National Security Act (NSA) following violent protests in Leh, which resulted in several deaths. Authorities allege that Wangchuk incited the unrest, a claim he denies. His wife has contested these allegations, describing them as baseless and part of a broader campaign to undermine his advocacy for the inclusion of Ladakh under the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution.
Angmo has approached the Supreme Court, challenging the legality of her husband’s detention and seeking his immediate release. She has also expressed concerns over the lack of transparency regarding his health and the conditions of his detention . Despite the tense situation, schools and businesses in Leh remain open, though heavy security measures are in place.
This development has sparked widespread protests across India, with many activists and civil society groups expressing solidarity with Wangchuk and demanding his release. The case has drawn attention to issues of governance and autonomy in Ladakh, highlighting the region’s aspirations for greater political and administrative rights.
As legal proceedings continue, the focus remains on ensuring a fair and transparent process, with hopes for a resolution that respects both national security concerns and the democratic rights of individuals.
