The Supreme Court of India has mandated a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the tragic stampede during actor-turned-politician Vijay’s rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu, which resulted in 41 fatalities and over 100 injuries. The court emphasized that a fair and impartial investigation is a fundamental right of the citizens. To ensure transparency, a three-member panel led by retired Supreme Court judge Ajay Rastogi has been appointed to oversee the investigation.
On September 27, 2025, a stampede occurred during a political rally organized by Vijay’s party, the Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK), in Karur district. The incident took place in Veluswamypuram, where large sections of the crowd surged towards the stage barricades, leading to a fatal crowd crush. Eyewitnesses reported that the crowd’s movement was triggered by delays in the event schedule and attempts to get closer to the stage. The lack of adequate crowd control measures contributed to the tragedy.
The Supreme Court intervened after concerns were raised about the impartiality of the initial investigation. The court noted that statements from top state police officials suggesting that their subordinates were not at fault created doubts about the independence of the inquiry. In response, the court transferred the case to the CBI and appointed a three-member panel to supervise the investigation.
The oversight panel, led by Justice Ajay Rastogi, will monitor the progress of the CBI’s probe. The panel’s mandate includes ensuring that the investigation is conducted impartially and that all aspects of the incident are thoroughly examined. The court has directed the CBI to submit monthly progress reports to the panel.
The stampede has sparked widespread public concern, with many calling for improved crowd management protocols at public events. Victims’ families and local residents have emphasized the need for preventive measures to avoid such tragedies in the future. Political leaders have expressed condolences and pledged support to the affected families.
The Supreme Court’s decision to order a CBI investigation into the Karur stampede underscores the importance of accountability and transparency in handling such incidents. The establishment of an oversight panel aims to ensure that the investigation is conducted without bias and that justice is served for the victims and their families. As the probe progresses, it is hoped that lessons will be learned to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
